Day 1: Meet in Midland, then shuttle to McDonald Observatory to begin our adventure. After lunch we’ll start with a spectacular descent to the town of Fort Davis and on to Alpine, where we’ll spend our first evening together.
Day 2: Today we have a rolly ride through the desert and mountains to Terlingua, where we stay our first night at Las Casitas at Far Flung Adventure Center. Soak in the hot tub and pool while enjoying the quiet solitude under the starry night sky.
Day 3: This is a day to truly explore deeper into Big Bend. In the morning, we will explore the Terlingua Ghost Town, a true hidden gem in far west Texas. In the afternoon, we’ll join our friends at Far Flung Outdoors for a float trip on the Rio Grande through Big Bend Ranch State Park. Then watch the sun set before dinner
Day 4: A scenic shuttle takes us to Chisos Basin Visitor Center in Big Bend National Park, right in the middle of some of the most impressive mountains in the southwest. We’ll have plenty of time to explore and hike around some of the trails in the park. After lunch, we’ll ride back down to Terlingua, starting with a stunning 2000-foot descent. After dinner, we’ll enjoy a private Star Party hosted by Astro Mucho right behind our casitas at Far Flung, because, as the song says, “The stars at night, are big and bright … in Texas!”
Day 5: Today is our most challenging ride of the week on FM 170 – also known as River Road. There’s plenty of climbing today on this winding mountain road that parallels the Rio Grande. The amazing views make it worth it though! We’ll end up in the famous town of Marfa tonight at the Hotel Paisano, which was the base of operations for the film Giant, starring James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor. After dinner, we’ll head to the Marfa Lights Viewing Area to look for the mysterious glowing orbs.
Day 6: This morning we’ll visit a few famous art installations, including Prada Marfa, as we sightsee our way to the ride’s start point. We’ll ride part of the famous Fort Davis Scenic Loop through gentle hills and ranch land on our way to Fort Davis. After our last lunch together, we head back to Midland arriving around dinnertime.
